Artisti, prendete posizione! Oggi. - Il genocidio a Gaza e la dissimulazione.
Cos'è un artista? È un particolare tipo di essere umano che ha la dannazione di non accontentarsi di grossolane risposte, che rifugge il pensiero omologante, che supera la vertigine collettiva, che ripudia l'indifferenza, perché il suo istinto è quello di reagire ai fatti della vita. Egli cerca le proprie risposte e sente l'urgenza di esprimere con un linguaggio unico un pensiero irripetibile e che ha tanto più valore quanto più è elevato a legge universale. Ciò che più ha sconvolto l'umanità negli ultimi ottant'anni è stata la follia nazista e ancor di più tutto l'apparato strategico, perverso e scientifico messo su con la sola intenzione di cancellare un popolo. Il silenzio dell'umanità che sapeva e che nonostante sapesse proseguiva con la propria vita senza fare nulla è stata la ferita più grande inferta a chi come me quei fatti li studiava dai libri. Il nostro sguardo incredulo sulla storia si è posato sull'incapacità di restare umani, sull'indifferenza, sull'ipocrisia, sulla codardia di chi nel proprio piccolo avrebbe potuto fare qualcosa e invece si è voltato dall'altra parte continuando con la propria vita.
Restare umani è coerenza, è fedeltà al proprio spirito. Restare umani è far sentire la propria voce, puntare il dito, non stringere mani. Essere umani è non fingere che nulla stia accadendo.
Ho sempre creduto che l'artista fosse l'essere umano più in sintonia con la propria umanità. Oggi ne sono delusa e resto incredula davanti a tutta questa dissimulazione. Nella danza l'artista crea ascoltando il cuore e l'anima, nella danza si rivive col pubblico l'orrore della guerra, la paura della morte, la disumanità di confini violati. Tramite l'artista l'essere umano urla il proprio desiderio di giustizia: sui palcoscenici egli sprona gli occhi e supera la razionalità, va oltre il limite, fa un balzo avanti superando l'umanità e mostrando continui atti di coraggio. Oggi che il governo israeliano sta sterminando un intero popolo, oggi che la verità su un'apartheid lunga 70 anni è sotto gli occhi di tutti, oggi che la disumanità del progetto sionista è portato all'estremo ed è più documentata che mai grazie ai social io vedo colleghi ignorare la realtà, vedo i loro like alle pagine di compagnie di danza istraeliane la cui fama è mondiale e che continuano a pubblicare video dopo video la loro quotidianità in sala prove come se nulla stesse accadendo. Non una dichiarazione da parte di queste compagnie riguardo la propria condanna verso questi atti disumani. Il nulla. Ogni israeliano che sia contrario al genocidio e alla violenza nei confronti delle e dei palestinesi deve ribellarsi e dichiararsi estraneo a questo disumano progetto.
Dove sono i vostri cuori di artista amici miei? Voi, che avete nei vostri portfolio creazioni sulla guerra, sulla tratta di individui, sui diritti negati, voi che ingoiate ingiustizie per restituire lavori artistici meravigliosamente umani. Voi che urlate nel vostro sublime linguaggio il bisogno di umanità. Voi oggi, per mantenere rapporti di lavoro fingete che nulla stia accadendo.
Abbiamo bisogno di voi, del vostro cuore e della vostra anima, abbiamo bisogno del vostro linguaggio universale e della vostra condanna. Ne abbiamo bisogno oggi e non quando tutto ciò sarà sui libri di storia. Oggi!
Usate la vostra voce, sfruttate la vostra visibilità per condannare e denunciare. O siete tutti disumanizzati dal bisogno di lavorare?
Le più importanti compagnie di danza israeliane sono la Batscheva Dance Company diretta da Ohad Naharin, la Vertigo Dance Company di Noa Wertheim, la Kibbutz Dance Company diretta da Rami Be'er e la Yasmeen Godder Dance Company. Compagnie che seguo e ammiro da anni. Una decina di anni fa ho anche intervistato la coreografa Noa Wertheim, un genio per me, un emblema di pace e serenità, ma alla mia domanda "cosa ne pensa delle proteste pro-palestina in occasione delle sue esibizioni?" (sono passati circa dieci anni da quel colloquio) lei mi rispose "dobbiamo pur avere una casa". Nient'altro.
Oggi capisco di più...
Bisogna tenere a mente che le citate compagnie di danza ricevono finanziamenti dal Governo israeliano e nello specifico dal Ministero della Cultura - noto per le idee di estrema destra, per il razzismo e la repressione nei confronti del popolo arabo e palestinese-, dal Ministero degli Affari Esteri, del Turismo, del Welfare e dei Servizi Sociali e dal Comune di Gerusalemme. A quanto pare, stando alla mia ricerca, tra le fila non ci sarebbero ballerini/e di origine araba e sembra che rientrino nel cosidetto Brand Israel, un proggetto che contribuisce a dare una "certa" immagine di Israele all'estero, fingendo che ciò che accade da 70 anni in realtà non sia reale.
Ohad Naharin ha firmato un appello insieme ad altre decine di artisti israeliani tra cui la cantante Noa, per denunciare la disumanizzazione dei palestinesi e degli israeliani. La lettera appare un po' ambigua dando un colpo al cerchio e uno alla botte. Ma almeno è un atto di coraggio. Bisognerebbe piuttosto che queste compagnie: rinunciassero ai fondi di un governo la cui follia omicida ha radici profonde, cancellassero tutte le date previste a Tel Aviv nei prossimi mesi (a un passo dai fiumi di sangue di bambini inermi) e che dichiarassero pubblicamente la loro condanna senza mezzi termini dell'apartheid, del colonialismo omicida guadagnando date all'estero e non sulla terra della morte.
È necessario restare umani. È necessario riconoscere che quel governo uccide con la fame, mortifica, umilia, tortura, stupra fino alla mosrte uomini, donne e bambini. Oggi tutti sappiamo e non possiamo più aprire il sipario fingendo che non stia accadendo. Siate dalla parte dell'umanità, perché le guerre partoriscono mostri, ma anche eroi.
Non abbiate paura di prendere posizione, abbiate piuttosto paura di perdere tutto se continuate a vivere nell'indifferenza.
E se l'artista è bugiardo è soltanto un clown che la storia condannerà.

Seguiamo e supportiamo i coreografi palestinesi (Farah Saleh, Samar Haddad King, Leyya Mona Tawil, Khaled Elayyan) e le compagnie (Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre, El-Funoun, Sareyyet Ramallah). A causa delle strutture di finanziamento israeliane e americane, i gruppi artistici e culturali palestinesi sono spesso presi di mira dai sionisti e lasciati con un budget scarso o nullo. Il governo centrale si rifiuta di sostenere qualsiasi organizzazione artistica e le poche che sopravvivenano su terra palestinese sono state sottoposte ad attacchi, arresti o completa distruzione. Durante la prima Intifada (una protesta di massa in cui i palestinesi sono scesi in piazza per porre fine all'occupazione israeliana), i membri della compagnia di dabke palestinese El-Funoun sono stati arrestati senza accusa, imprigionati e sottoposti a torture fisiche e mentali.
Amnesty International dichiara:
"La nostra ricerca pubblicata nel febbraio 2022 dimostra che Israele impone un sistema di oppressione e dominazione sulle e sui palestinesi in tutte le aree sotto il suo controllo: in Israele e nei Territori occupati, e contro i rifugiati palestinesi, in modo che a beneficiarne siano le e gli ebrei israeliani. Ciò equivale all’apartheid ed è proibita dal diritto internazionale."

What is an artist? He is a particular type of human being who is damned not to be satisfied with crude answers, who shuns homologating thought, who overcomes collective vertigo, who repudiates indifference, because his instinct is to react to the facts of life. He seeks his own answers and feels the urgency to express with a unique language an unrepeatable thought that has all the more value the more it is elevated to a universal law. What has most shocked humanity in the last eighty years has been the Nazi madness and even more the entire strategic, perverse and scientific apparatus set up with the sole intention of wiping out a people. The silence of humanity that knew and that despite knowing continued with its life without doing anything has been the greatest wound inflicted on those like me who studied those facts from books. Our incredulous gaze on history has fallen on the inability to remain human, on indifference, on hypocrisy, on the cowardice of those who in their own small way could have done something and instead turned the other way and continued with their lives.
Remaining human is coherence, it is faithfulness to one's spirit. Remaining human is making one's voice heard, pointing the finger, not shaking hands. Being human is not pretending that nothing is happening.
I have always believed that the artist was the human being most in tune with his own humanity. Today I am disappointed and remain incredulous in the face of all this dissimulation. In dance the artist creates by listening to the heart and soul, in dance we relive with the audience the horror of war, the fear of death, the inhumanity of violated borders. Through the artist, the human being screams his desire for justice: on stage he spurs his eyes and surpasses rationality, goes beyond the limit, makes a leap forward surpassing humanity and showing continuous acts of courage. Today, when the Israeli government is exterminating an entire people, today, when the truth about a 70-year long apartheid is there for all to see, today, when the inhumanity of the Zionist project is taken to the extreme and is more documented than ever thanks to social media, I see colleagues ignoring reality, I see their likes on the pages of Israeli dance companies whose fame is worldwide and who continue to publish video after video of their daily life in the rehearsal room as if nothing were happening. Not a single statement from these companies regarding their condemnation of these inhuman acts. Nothing. Every Israeli who is against genocide and violence against Palestinians must rebel and declare themselves extraneous to this inhuman project.
Where are your artistic hearts, my friends? You, who have in your portfolios creations about war, about human trafficking, about denied rights, you who swallow injustices to return wonderfully human artistic works. You who scream in your sublime language the need for humanity. You today, to maintain working relationships, pretend that nothing is happening.
We need you, your heart and your soul, we need your universal language and your condemnation. We need it today and not when all this will be in the history books. Today!
Use your voice, exploit your visibility to condemn and denounce. Or are you all dehumanized by the need to work?
The most important Israeli dance companies are the Batscheva Dance Company directed by Ohad Naharin, the Vertigo Dance Company by Noa Wertheim, the Kibbutz Dance Company directed by Rami Be'er and the Yasmeen Godder Dance Company. It should be kept in mind that the aforementioned dance companies receive funding from the Israeli government and specifically from the Ministry of Culture - known for its far-right ideas, racism and repression against the Arab and Palestinian people -, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tourism, Welfare and Social Services and from the Municipality of Jerusalem. Apparently, according to my research, there are no dancers of Arab origin among the ranks and it seems that they are part of the so-called Brand Israel, a project that contributes to giving a "certain" image of Israel abroad, pretending that what has been happening for 70 years is not actually real.
Ohad Naharin has signed an appeal together with dozens of other Israeli artists including the singer Noa, to denounce the dehumanization of Palestinians and Israelis. The letter seems a bit ambiguous, giving a blow to both sides. But at least it is an act of courage. It would be better if these companies: renounced the funds of a government whose murderous madness has deep roots, cancelled all the dates scheduled in Tel Aviv in the coming months (one step away from the rivers of blood of defenseless children) and publicly declared their condemnation without mincing words of apartheid, of murderous colonialism by gaining dates abroad and not in the land of death.
It is necessary to remain human. It is necessary to recognize that that government kills with hunger, mortifies, humiliates, tortures, rapes men, women and children to the point of death. Today we all know and we can no longer raise the curtain pretending that it is not happening. Be on the side of humanity, because wars give birth to monsters, but also heroes.
Do not be afraid to take a stand, rather be afraid of losing everything if you continue to live in indifference.
And if the artist is a liar he is only a clown that history will condemn.
We follow and support Palestinian choreographers (Farah Saleh, Samar Haddad King, Leyya Mona Tawil, Khaled Elayyan) and companies (Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre, El-Funoun, Sareyyet Ramallah). Due to Israeli and American funding structures, Palestinian arts and cultural groups are often targeted by Zionists and left with little or no budget. The central government refuses to support any arts organization and the few that survive on Palestinian land have been subjected to attacks, arrests or complete destruction. During the first Intifada (a mass protest in which Palestinians took to the streets to end the Israeli occupation), members of the Palestinian dabke company El-Funoun were arrested without charge, imprisoned and subjected to physical and mental torture.
Amnesty International said:
"Our research published in February 2022 shows that Israel imposes a system of oppression and domination on Palestinians in all areas under its control: in Israel and the occupied territories, and against Palestinian refugees, so that Israeli Jews benefit. This amounts to apartheid and is prohibited under international law."
